Descendants of Sciota R. Crook of Scott County Virginia

January 10, 2008 by Doug Carter 2 Comments

My grandfather, Floyd Sr, was born (1904) and grew up in Ft Blackmore until he was about 20 years old. With the help of Bobbie Johnson, my father and I did a lot of research several years ago in Scott county with several visits to relatives and collecting a great number of stories, pictures, and data. We documented some of our research in one book, “Descendants of Sciota R. Crook of Scott County Virginia”.

On March 12, 1994 as my wife, my son and I approached the Scott Co. courthouse steps for the first time, we met a man who could tell by our looks why we were there, (research). It was Harry Penley, the County Clerk, the most helpfuf, friendly person we could have met. He told us that the person we should talk to was a FT. Blackmore resident, Bobbie Johnson, and as we learned, Mr. Penley was right. Mrs. Johnson credited her husband, G.A. with the real help. He said why don’t you ask Hoyt McConnell if he knew my dad. He did and very well, thank goodness, and the rest is history. Had it not been for G.A. and Hoyt, (both have since passed away), our trip would have been in vain I believe.

We learned much about the Crook and Carter families and we learned a lot about the people of Scott County today. They are fine people and we thank them.

I was wondering if in your research in Scott Co., Va, if you came across any good web sights. I am looking for more documents on George Pike b-abt 1815 and his wife Jane they were in Scotts Co. in 1850 and moved to Wayne Co. I am looking for the parents of George. I have not found any helpful sights, just their census records. I cannot even find a maiden name for Jane. Any help with good web sights would be appreciated.
