The Complete 1850 Scott County Virginia Census

My great-grandparents Adolphus Moseley and Adeline Hale. Adeline was born Feb. 1891 in Duffield, Scott Co., VA.

Over 15 years ago I transcribed the Scott County, Virginia, 1850 Federal census and put it online at Rootsweb.com. That site seems to have gotten hijacked so I moved it here.

When I published it, I wrote:

Special thanks to Bernice, who proof-read every page. It was a big project and without her help I would have never finished. Thanks to Mary who helped decipher some of the names that were almost impossible to read. Thank you to every one who wrote words of encouragement, you kept me motivated! And also to my dear mother, who’s family lead me to Scott County and all the nice folks I have encountered along the way.

Inspired by many of my ancestors, who were born, grew up, married, raised families, died and are buried in Scott County, and by Brain Caudill’s wonderful 1850 Letcher County KY Census Page.

In the original census each numbered page was actually two hand-written pages, so when you view the pages here don’t forget to scroll down to see both sheets.

There are 228 individual pages in this census, they are numbered from 350a to 463b. Each link below contains both the “a” and “b” pages. The name index contains all of the names in the census, not just the head of the household. Every attempt has been made to transcribe these census records EXACTLY as they are given in the original, misspellings and all. If you see a mistake, it could me mine or Mr. Shoemaker’s (the enumerator). Remember that this is my interpretation of Mr. Shoemaker’s interpretation. It is recommended that you refer to the actual census records and come to your own conclusions.

If you cannot find someone, make sure to check any alternate spelling of their surname. I have found one of my surnames spelled nine different ways! These records have been put online for free use by the public.

The information these records contain is PUBLIC DOMAIN, but the format they have been put in belongs to me and is protected by COPYRIGHT. Please feel free to save, print and use them for your genealogical research, but they are NOT TO BE SOLD OR USED FOR ANY COMMERCIAL PURPOSE WHAT-SO-EVER.

Please read my Transcription Notes before continuing…
