William Lawson was born June 26, 1731 at Montrose, Scotland. He is the only son of a widow lady, no information is available on his father, however, it is assumed that he was killed in the Culloden Battle. William was one of the rebels arrested and confined at Chester and Carlisle after the battle. The Scottish rebels became a threat to the the English crown, and on September 26, 1746 an agreement was signed with the English Treasury to transport the prisoners to the plantations (American Colonies) at the rate of 5 pounds per head. The “Gildart” departed from England on May 5, 1747 and arrived August 5, 1747 at Port North, Potomac, Maryland with a William Lawson on the passenger list.
William, “The Apprentice”
William Lawson was bound over to a planter by the Captain of the ship for a good sum in tobacco. The people did not treat well, and after a while William ran away. Sometime in the 1750’s William met and married a Rebecca ?, in the 1858 Halifax County, Virginia marriage register there is a William Lawson to a Jane Banks. If this is our William she is probably Rebecca Jane Banks.
William, “The Revolutionary”
William never realized that one day he would be facing the British army again, but this time, in a new and different land. William swore allegiance to the State of Virginia and the American cause, as noted in the Montgomery County Court Book “Revolutionary War” page 145-148 filed at the courthouse in Christianburg, Virginia. although almost fifty years old he served as a member of the Captain Daniel Trigg’s Company of Montgomery County militia. There were only two William Lawson’s to serve in the revolutionary war and they were father and son.

If you check your dates, William “The Rebel” could not be the William Lawson who married 1858 in Halifax, VA. He died in 1826 Scott County, VA. This could possibly be one of there grandsons that married Jane Banks. Also, I do not think that William “The Rebel” Lawson married in VA, I think he married in NC where he ran away to, first off because some of his children were born in NC and secondly he stayed in NC/VA area until right before American Revolutionary War. I am a descendant from the Travis Lawson Lineage. So there are still many questions. If I can be of help to anyone, or if anyone has information regarding the William “REBEL” Lawson, I would love to hear from you. Thank You.

I am also of the Travis Lineage. (Robt –> Travis—> Jeremiah —>Lucinda Lawson Wells (She married Benjamin Franklin Wells) —-> Lucy Wells Sloan (She married Hiram Murphy and then, after he died, Cleve Sloan) —-> Anne (aka Annabelle on birth cert, used Anne) Sloan (my paternal grandmother who married William Tickel). My grandmother Anne Sloan Tickel had 6 sisters, my great aunts, the oldest of which, Artie Murphy, died at 97 years of age. The great aunts (Note that Ann Sloan, my grandmother, was killed in a car accident when I was about 8) told my first cousin a story about a Cherokee great, great etc. (about 7 generations back) grandmother that same up from the Carolinas to Virginia. When I began researching this side of my family, I discovered that I am descended from the Scottish Rebel. The story my great aunts told is consistent with the Rebel’s wife coming up from North Carolina etc. Since he was on the lamb (escaped and was presumably in hiding), who knows what really happened. Could he have met in the wildnerss of N. Carolina, a Cherokee hub, a women of Cherokee ancestry whom he later married? This might explain why all or most of their children were born in N. Carolina? This might also explain the story my great aunts told of our native american ancestry on this side of the family. It has occurred to me that since the Scottish Rebel lived to be 94, he may have married twice. Perhaps we should consider the possiblity of two wives? I would love to know more about who the mother of the Rebel’s children was.
Hello Ruthanne–I am also descended from Travis-Jeremiah-Lucinda and Benjamin. and John Thomas Wells (brother of your great grandmother Lucy Wells Sloan. My grandmother (daughter of John Thomas and Lucy Derosset) was Myrtia Wells Bowlin of Middletown, OH Lucy died in Middletown and I have a copy of her obituary, funeral home information, and would be happy to take a picture of her grave for you if you would like me to. I was wondering if there have been any bible records or any family correspondence passed down thru the Wells family that you might be aware of? I am trying to find out when and where my John Thomas died. He was in Logan, West Virginia in 1920 census and then nothing after that. I hope to hear from you soon.

Thanks for your reply. I just got back on the site. My father might be able to help, but he may also be too young to remember. Unfortunatley all of my grandmother’s (Anne or Anabel Sloan Tickel, Lucy Well Sloan’s daughter) sisters died (the last past about 5 years ago = longevity) already, so I can’t ask them (they would have known). There is a Wells reunion every year in Kentucky. Do you go. They might be able to answer your question. I will ask my dad (Dave Cleve Tickely, Lucy Wells Sloan’s grandson – he loved her a lot, he gushes when he talks about her & he is not a gusher – she must have been very special). I know that Lucy Wells Sloan, my great grandmother, moved to Middletown for a job after losing her 2nd husband (Cleve Sloan) at a young age and moving back to Kentucky. I’ll see what I can find out.

Note that the story I was told by my cousin was of a great, great, great (7 generations back) grandmother that came up from N. Carolina to VA. It is possible this is the mother of Travis et al. (a wife of the Rebel).
Jane Banks and William Lawson who were married in Halifax VA. are a different Lawson family altogether. See the DNA charting of Carl Lawson for proof. This Lawson family ended up in Georgia. They also had a son named William who is buried in Indiana. They are no relations to our Rebel William.

My gggggrandfather was William Lawson who came to Nova Scotia in 1784 as an United Empire Loyalist. The information printed is that there were only 2 William Lawsons in the American Revolution-father and son. None of the information is the same as what I have gathered regarding my ggggggrandfather. I believe that William “The Rebel” Lawson’s father’s name was alson William Lawson and he was born in 1705 and died in 1746. If anyone has the whole family tree please let me know.

Can you elaborate why you think Wm’s father was Wm 1705-1746? if that is because you have seen it on family trees online, please take note, NO one has ever-ever proven the name of Wm’s father. Only speculation. From your recent direct emails to me I think you are very new into researching your Lawson lines, which you know are from Wm the Rebel. You have go that down very well.
But I think you have stumbled across one of those many trees online that states Wm’s parents and/or his wife with nada nada nada bit of proof. Many people have been searching for the parents of Wm The Rebel for years. And for years, people have been posting assumed, and/or picked up from other assumed files.
No one I have seen who who posts an online tree for Wm The Rebel and states his parents gives a real source for such parents. Any real source for Wm’s parents would have to come from Scottish or English records from the 1700’s. I have yet to hear from any Wm Lawson researcher who has gone to Scotland and found proof.

To clarify the wife listed in this original post. We now know that Wm The Rebel did not marry Jane Banks. That was a different Wm Lawson. James Quarles, 2nd Regt. DAR records state he was born 1740 in Halifax co., VA, died before 25 October, 1800, in Hancock Co., GA. He was also a captain in James Quarles 2nd Regt.

Lawson (1826-1906) who, in turn, was the great grandson of the William Lawson who married Jane Banks and died in Georgia. Genealogy: Collecting dead relatives and sometimes a live cousin!
I am the grandson of Othie Lawson and recently started to see if I could trace our genealogy. I came across a website called http://www.cheesbrough.org that traces my grandfather back to William Lawson. I was completely unaware that the Lawson side of my family has such a history or that so many have worked to put this together. I live in Birmingham, Alabama. My father, Joseph Lawson, lives in Akron, Ohio and Naples, Florida. I have not spoken to him about this yet so I don’t know if he even knows the family history.

I just followed the link to this gedcom. I am quite shocked to see that the information there is a flat out copy of my own database from rootsweb AND it shows the names of living individuals which mine does not. Nearly if not all the data can be attributed to my own research, that of Bill Porter’s book and many other Lawson cousins who have contributed. It would appear that Gerald Lawson out of the United Kingdon who has the Lawson One Name Study project has copied all our work. Hi. My brother, David Mark Lawson and I have just discovered we are family members. Our father is Joseph Leroy Lawson, only child of Othie and Ella Rae. There has been no record of my father on the family chart. He was listed as “private” under child. Our great grandfather is Levi Hansford.

It is nice to meet you over the email anyway. My grandfather was (Lafe) Lafayette Jeremiah Lawson, which was a brother to you Othie- If you check under Osa G in some of the family trees you will find Othie-most people called him Osa. My Uncle Paul, which would be a cousin to you, has asked me to find information regard Osa. And I am actually putting a book together for him and my Uncle Gene regarding all of there cousins for them. Lafe married Anna Lou Cox and they had 9 children-2 died in infancy (they are buried in Woodside Cemetery along the oldest part next to Lafe brother who died in Army Training.) Lafe and Anna Lou are buried in Woodside and in front of them are Betty Mae (twin to Wanda) and Jake. Levi Hansford and Margaret Maggie Hayes Lawson are buried in Woodside also, there are actually quite a few members of the Lawson family buried there. Clifford is buried with his family in Trenton. Chester is buried in Woodside and Alvin and most that moved on to Indiana are buried there. Andy is in Florida, not for sure if he is still at the funeral home but he was cremated and wanted to be brought back to where Jeremiah Myron Lawson is buried in Back Cemetery in Menifee Kentucky. Levi’s mother Mary Ellen is buried in Indiana, she actually lived with Levi and Maggie at the time of her death. I do have a lot of information if you would like. The reason they put living is because they do not have permission from that person to put into the database, if it is a personnal family tree you can have them, but if it goes on line anyone that doesn’t have a death date or is still living then it will not be published. I thank you, for some of your information because my Uncle Paul has really been interested in what happen to Osa and to Martha but I can’t find any info about her.

A wonderful hello! In terms of ancestry hounds, I am relatively new. But I have been doing my research! We are trying to “prove” to DAR the line of my grand-mother back to William Lawson. Our family history and stories all indicate that William Lawson is our ancestor but we would like to prove it.

Hi Pat, You can check death records for Kentucky for Travis T, James P and Travis they all died in Kentucky-try the death records for Wolfe, Morgan, Menifee, Breathitt and Letcher-most of the counties where not counties yet and they were made up out of the other counties, also try United States Mortiality records for Kentucky, they might be there. Also, there is a plack that is suppose to go up in Wolfe County where Travis and Maysie lived, don’t know if it has gone up yet, but I have heard it was suppose to, they are suppose to be buried on their land. My guess knowing Kentucky, they all were buried on their property or family cemeteries that are located on land that one or the other owned. By the way the Daltons are on my mom’s side who was Anna Margaret’s parents do you have information about them. I am also from James P family line but with his second wife Mary “Polly” Ward. So we could be double related.LOL hope this helps in your search. Amber

A family story suggests that William Lawson, the Rebel’s wife, Travis’s mom, was full blood Cherokee. Have you heard the story. There is a post on Floyd County Simpkins genology page indicating that Lawson family had tradition that there is Native blood going back to Travi Lawson’s (our Travis) line. Have you heard the story? Also, do you have any idea where Travis was born (in North Carolina I belive) or where his grave is located in KY? My gg grandmother was Lucy Lawson Wells.
Just found this site and wanted to share we many be related. I descend from the Harper line. I believe wick Kendall Harper not listed had a daughter mollie harper who is my grandmother. So wick can be traced back to Travis etc. I have Lao heard the story of a revolutionary war veteran that married a native princess down south.
Mollie Harper (stark) had three girls. Together they had 28 kids. The 28 kids have had over seventy children.

Pat have you made any progress in your DAR quest? I am concerned about your dates for Eliza Simpkins-Lawson. You have her dying in 1880. She is not actually ever even been proven as James Lawson’s first wife. Her name has been taken as a given by Lawson researchers of this line but no one seems to have a source.
Mary “POlly” Ward is proven as his second wife per the marriage in Morgan Co, Ky Aug 8, 1831. Mary is the wife who was still alive in 1880.

If you look closely, those are the dates for James P Lawson not Eliza Simpkins. She just added the dates in the wrong place, she put it behind Eliza instead of James.
What is this about not having the information about Eliza not being James’ first wife, from everything that I can find she is. Also, I have a cousin that also does research and he is from the family line of James P and Eliza Simpkins. Do you think that they really weren’t married with her being a cherokee or what? Could the paperwork to prove this be in Dawes research or maybe paperwork that got destroyed in Virginia?

From a recent (Nov 2011) DNA test, it appears that this Lawson line “Might” connect to Randolph Lawson and Susannah, but much more research needs to be completed.
The Pedigree chart listed indicates that the parents of Henry Milford Lawson (Sep 20, 1884 Scott Co., TN, – June 1979 Briceville, AndersonTN) were William Jesse Lawson and Lydia Gibson.

I am trying to find more information on Lucy Carter (child of Joseph Carter) who was supposedly married to a William Lawson. They are mentioned as heirs in the Probate papers of Joseph Carter who died in 1844 in Illinois. Joseph Carter, my 4x great grandfather was the son of Dale Carter of the Indian scalping. Where can I find more documentation that she is a child of Joseph…is there a birth record? She is said to have died in 1828 and yet the probate record says William and Lucie Lawson, one of the eleven heirs. One heir was a grandson, child of Thomas Carter. I come from James Carter who preceeded Joseph in death. Where was Lucie when this estate was probated in 1845 in Shelby, IL?

Try contacting Bill Porter, he is the one who wrote about William “the Rebel” Lawson, there are two books, the first is some information, but I found that the Travis line is not really mentioned that much, the second book is suppose to have more information in it, I haven’t seen it so I am not for sure how much information is there. Carl Lawson has done a wonderful job of compiling information on as many Lawson’s possible in early VA and NC. He has a large amount of transcribed records there posted in a time line style. He also keeps a chart of many test results from the Lawson DNA project.
I’m looking for my ggggg grandmother Alsey/Alcey “Alice” Lawson born in I think Stokes Co. North Carolina in 1768 she married Bartley Belcher and her daughter Sarah “Sally” Belcher was born in 1801 in Stokes County North Carolina. I don’t know who her parents were and would like to know. I found the dates of birth and states of birth on Census so they are correct. Interesting that Betsy Lawson was born the same year listed above. My ggg grandmother Alice had a daughter named Elizabeth “Betsey” Belcher that married Col. David Rogers my ggg grandparents. I wonder how Alice and Betsey Lawson were related since they were born in N.C. the same year!

There were at one time several William Lawson’s in Virginia. The one known as “The Rebel”, born 1731 Scotland married Rebecca. Her last name is unknown, but there is speculation that she could have been Rebecca Travis.
The William Lawson who married Jane Banks ended up inGeorgia.

You are making an assumption that his father was killed at Culloden. There has been no proof. Early reports only states “he was the only son of a widow lady”.
Many people are connecting the Rebel with Rebecca Jane Banks.. This is a different William Lawson, and they went to Georgia. DNA has proven the separate lines. See Carl Lawson DNA.
No parents have been proven for William (1731). All postings of his parents have been proven incorrect.
I have recently CONFIRMED that I am also a direct descendant of William “A Scottish Rebel” Lawson. My great grandmother (That I can remember very well) was Annie Doty (Bowman) Taylor. Her mother was Margaret Josephine (Lawson) Bowman, and Margaret’s parents were William Lawson IV and Hulda Baxter (Addington) Lawson, and William Lawson IV’s parents were William Lawson III and Lucy (Carter) Lawson, and William Lawson III’s parents were William Lawson II and Nancy (Baker) Lawson and of course William Lawson II’s parents were William “A Scottish Rebel” Lawson and Rebecca Jane (Banks) Lawson. I was THRILLED when I CONFIRMED it was true. My great grandmother Annie Doty (Bowman) Taylor is buried about four miles from where I am sitting, and my great, great grandmother Margaret Josephine (Lawson) Bowman is buried about one mile from where I am sitting. I have recently acquired some pictures of William Lawson IV and Hulda Baxter (Addington) Lawson. I have also learned the Addington’s have a rich history themselves. I never knew that tracking down my family history would be so much fun, and also VERY enlightening to see that we actually do have ancestors that were somewhat famous.

They had several children, and were married in Blount Couty, Tennessee. After the Tennessee period, they moved to Arkansas and ended up in Boone County, Arkansas. William Lawson IV and Hulda are buried not far from where I live. I also have cousins that are Lawsons that came from the Travis Lawson line that I have known for years that live close by. My cousin and I are planning a trip this fall to Scott County Virginia to look up some of our ancestors and take some pictures of whatever we can. Jacob Myers, my 2 great grandfather, was married to Nancy Chambliss, daughter of Henry Chambliss from Virginia and Sallie. One of their sons was a Lawson Fuller Myers. The name Lawson keeps popping up in the Chambliss line, yet I can not find any connection to the Myers’ line. Any hints or connection ideas would be appreciated. When Nancy died giving birth to her daughter (Nancy Myers) , Lawson Chambliss tried to take all of the Myers children away from Tennessee to Texas, but Jacob went after them and brought all back to Union Co. Tn. w/the exception of William who chose to stay w/his Chambliss grandfather. William later served in the Confederate Army and did survive. Could Sallie’s maiden name have been Lawson? Can use any/all info anyone has on the Chambliss line as pertains to those mentioned above. Thanks.

What a great site of “family sharing”. I find all comments very interesting. Amazing what we can do now with technology. After reading sites and looking at ancestor lines, I believe I am related through Alsey (Lawson) Nickell, Harris.
My line- through Alsey and her second husband- William Hayden Harris.
Then their son- Henry Chandler Harris , and his wife Ann (Clark).
Then their daughter- Julia Ann (Harris), her husband John William Ramey.
Then their son- Garrison Anderson Ramey, his wife Ethel Anis (Cox).
Their daughter, my mother. Then me.
There was a story of Indian ancestry in our family as well (as most families), and a mention of word “tuckaho”. I have search for years to find -a root to make bread; a river near Maryland; assoc. with “cohee”-depending on which side of Mountains you were from; to possible Indian chief. Maybe I have been searching wrong family line.
Does anyone have proof of the Indian ancestry connection in Lawson-Simpkins line?
