September 16, 2006 by Patty 8 Comments

alderson1920s.jpg

Mary Catherine CULBERTSON was born in Scott Co. VA 9 January 1854. Her parents were Edward J. CULBERTSON and Martha C. GIBSON. Edward and Martha appear in the 1850 Scott, Co. VA census Household #505, before Mary Catherine was born.

The picture shows Mary Catherine CULBERTSON ALDERSON and her daughters in about 1927, Clayton, Union County, NM. Mary Catherine married Andrew Patterson ALDERSON in Washington County, VA on 3 September 1874. Andrew was the son of George Washington ALDERSON and Lydia PATTERSON who resided in Washington County, VA.

After Mary Catherine and Andrew were married they migrated to Hunt Co., TX and lived in that area until about 1907, when they moved to Apache Valley in Union County, New Mexico. Living in the Seneca area until they passed away. She and Andrew are both buried at Creeds Chapel Cemetery, which is approximately 11 miles north east of Clayton and near what once was the community of Seneca, NM.

The little Methodist church which was next to the cemetery has fallen in on itself. The cemetery is in fair condition. Some family members continue to care for it.

The picture includes: Back row, left to right, Maggie Glenn ALDERSON WATERS, Bertie ALDERSON TOWER, Isabelle ALDERSON MOCK. Front center: Mary Catherine CULBERTSON ALDERSON, about 74 years of age. On either side of her are two other daughters, one is Edna ALDERSON REEVE and Emma ALDERSON MYERS (I’m not certain which is Edna and which is Emma). ~Marcelle

Mary Catherine Culbertson resembles the Gibson family. Her mother, Martha C. Gibson-Culbertson was born 11 June 1825 in Russell Co. VA the daughter of William S. Gibson and Permelia Peery.

Hi, My great-grandmother was Elizabeth A.Culbertson. She married James Monroe Wood of Scott County. They were married in Sullivan County, Tenn. She died in 1912 of Typhoid Fever. One of her sons had contracted it and she nursed him. That is how she got it. I have a picture of Elizabeth A. as a young girl. I also have a picture of her sister, Ellen and Frank Wood. Frank was a cousin of James Monroe. If anyone is interested in seeing a picture of her, e-mail me.

I have recently made contact with Shirley MOCK, also a great granddaughter of Mary Catherine. Isabelle (Belle)ALDERSON Mock was her grandmother. Shirley told me that in the front row on the left is Emma who married a Myers and on the right is Edna who married a Reeves.

Tyree Cu lbertson married Martha Vicars and I am from the same Vicars clan. At least i hope so. Martha’s brother John Vicars and his daughter Nancy Vicars is my direct line although my info is skewed. John disappeared around the time Nancy was born and it is inconclusive to me whether he is indeed her father. I’ve been searching for years trying to find a birth record for her. She had a son and daughter but was never married, hence i carried the Vicars name. Aren’t these old family stories a HOOT!!! I’m glad you have identified who you are.

In 1851 To john and Lucinda Culbertson. Anything that you help me with in finding a birth record or anything
about Sarah and her mother Rebecca would be greatly appreciated.
