This is a picture of my husband’s mother (Blanche Minerva Johnson Wells) and some of her brothers and sisters. Blanche married John F. Wells of Big Stone Gap and they had eight children–Maude Wells Wilson, James Wells, Laura Wells Adams Rogers, Stella Wells Jones, Amanda Wells Ball, Owen Wells, Albert Wells, and my husband Glenn Edward Wells. All of these brothers and sisters are now dead.

The lady second from the left, dark dress and hat is my grandmother, “Mommie” Cornelia Johnson Williams. Her son, Raiford, who died in 1946 was my father.

My grandfather was David Benton Johnson and he married Matilda Hounshell. They lived in Big Stone Gap. I would appreciate any info both sides of my family. Especially the Johnson side as I have hit a brick wall with finding out very much on them. David’s parents were Annie Sturgill and James Johnson but that is all I know.

Doris, Annie Sturgill’s parents may have been Samuel (b. abt. 1842 in Kentucky) and Nancy Mullins (b. abt. 1843 in Kentucky). The Johnsons are tough, like my Jones family… Lot’s of needles in the haystack.

The lady on the far right, Polly Ora Johnson Kilgore is my grandmother. She was born in Scott County, VA and grew up in the little mining community (camp) of Imboden in Wise Co., VA. She married Albert Newton Kilgore and continued to live in Imboden until she and Newt bought a small farm in Powell Valley near the little town of Big Stone Gap in Wise Co., Virginia. They lived in that house the remainder of their lives. They had 12 children, 9 of which lived to adulthood. They were my father, Ralph Kilgore, born in 1920, Clarence, Frances Kilgore Simmonds, Douglas, Louise Kilgore Wilson, Bobby, Donald Earl, Eva Marie (Tootsie) Kilgore Loveland, and Johnny. Their son Jimmie was killed when a section of the stone foundation of their house in Imboden dislodged and fell on him. Twins Mary and Marvin were premature and dies shortly after they were born. I remember all of the people in this picture. My dad believed in visiting family and I have many memories of visits as well as family reunions at Bullit Park in Big Stone Gap.
We were especially close to Aunt Monnie. Aunt Monnie was married to Melvin Parsons and lived most of their lives in Imboden. Melvin was a gentle, wonderful man. He loved to sing and had many gatherings at his house for the neighbors to sing. He read shape notes and sang with quartets. He and Aunt Monnie had two daughters: Ruth Parsons Jones who still lives in Kingsport, TN and Louise Woodward who passed away several years ago. Thanks to Jean Brand for submitting the photo. I have never seen it before, but readily recognized all of the subjects. I have scattered information about others in the photo if anyone is interested. My Email is TeaPotBKA@AOL.com. I have done some extensive work on the Kilgore family, but not much on the Johnsons, although I am headed in that direction.

    Hi,
I think Blanche Johnsonn Well is my gggrandmother, my grandmother was
Stella Wells Jones, she was married to Mesby Jones and they had three
children:The oldest is Carl Edward, Carl is my father. I was never around any of the family in Big Stone Gap. Carl move from BSG years ago. I live in
    Louisiana.
Stella passed away in 2002 and Mesby passed away I think In the 90’s
I do know that Stella’s family is from Scott County, Cracker’s Neck.
Think you for posting the picture and names. I don’t have any pictures of my family in BSG except for a picture of Stella and Mesby. Stella’s nickname was Polly.

she had 9 kids and 7 were still living in 1900
    Louaidisia is gone by 1900.
the last two born after 1900.

His parents were William Johnson b 1840 scott co. va

In 1870 Henry is living with Robert and Minerva Penley.
William Johnsons parents were probably William and Mary /Polly Johnston listed on the 1850 census for Scott co. va although the father is gone by then. somewhere along the way a T was added to Johnson and then later dropped again. There was a William Johnson who married a Mary Margaret Cockran in Scott co. but I dont know if this is same one or not.

It is a John C Johnson, wife went by the name Esther and my great grandmother who is Mary went by the name of Mamie, she was born around 1914. This family also has a Hall connection. I am unsure if Esther/Easter was married to a hall before John or not, she does have an older child by the name of Gilmer Hall who married a Katie Clark in 1920. My great grandmother was married to a JH Hammond in Wise County Va in 1929 who went by the name of Ike.
