The picture is of Col Joel H. Fleenor (b.7-26-32, d.4-26-11) and his grandson, Carl James Anderson, the son of his daughter Sarah ‘Sallie’ and her husband J. Thomas. After growing up in living in Scott County, Col. Fleenor moved to Russellville, Ten with his daughter and son John.
The 1910 census notes that Col Fleenor age 77, lived with his daughter after his wifes death (Sarah Ann’ Smith’ Fleenor b.10-15-1829, d.2/10/1908), and had a grandson Carl J. Anderson, age 9 (born 1901). If you use the JHF birth date and the picture notes of his age, the picture was taken around 9-24-06.
I’ve never found anything referring to the rank of Colonel. Please share whatever you have regarding his career in the CSA.
His grave marker has the ‘Col’ inscribed before his name. You can see it in ‘Find a Grave’ https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/99327823/joel-h-fleenor
The only reference to the rank of Colonel I’ve been able to find is in a book: “Virginia and Virginians: Eminent Virginians … History of Virginia from Settlement of Jamestown to Close of the Civil War, Volume 2” by Robert Alonzo Brock and Virgil Anson Lewis, published in 1888.
