One look at Thos. Patton & you see Native American features. Thos. Patton is one of the numerous grandchildren of James “Big Jim” Williams (1793-1851) & Temperance “Tempy” Lane (1793- 1860). Big Jim was the son of an unknown Cherokee & Catherine Williams. Tempy was d/o Corbin Lane (1738-1816) & Jane AKA Frances “Fanny” Prock (<1754 ->1817). Jim & Tempy who lived up on Copper Ridge had 12 kids one of whom was Rial Martin (b1824)– the father of Thos. Patton. Rial married Matilda Lark. They had 10 kids, the oldest of which was Thos. Patton (b1849). Thos married on 1/13/1875 Virginia G.A.Templeton (1858-1948) d/o John D.Templeton (1830-1903) & Mary Ann Jane Alley (1821-1872).John D, a former high sheriff of Scott Co, was the uncle of James Elbert “Dr.Jimmy” Templeton whose picture shows up elsewhere on this site.

Just visited family in VA/TN and we discussed the Indian like features that our ancestors had, thanks for connecting the dots as my 3x great grandfather was James “Big Jim” Williams. My father carried the name Patton and now my grandson is named Patton.

It is also possible that this is Thomas Patton Williams (1882-1957) who m. Polly Alley Williams (1884-1979). They had a granddaughter Frances Williams who is a daughter of Kenneth Ralph Williams (1909-1984) and Pearl Mae Templeton (1903-1999).

Thomas Patton Williams is my 4th gr. grandfather.
I believe from research that he is of Melungeon descent as are many Williams’ in SW VA and NE TN.
We have many ancestors with the Melungeon features, which we assumed were of Native American/White descent. (Lawson & Sampson families are also Melungeon surnames within our family).
