Note: In these old records Dr. stands for Debtor, and To also means “For” as in what the amount being charged is for
So if saying To does not sound right try saying For…. I can’t type it the way they wrote it. I have tried to keep the spelling the way it was on these documents. I have also written notes to myself about some of the accounts. I transcribed these into a Spreadsheet so the alignment here may not be great, but Is still readable. Enjoy!

The debts were for Barrells of Salt which sold for abt. $3.20 to $3.30 there was a balance of $6.45 cents on this act.

Note: notice here that this note is one that was being questioned by John’s daughter in the
case against her uncle Hez. P. Neil. On most all of the notes you see here John Allen made his
mark as a J. not an X. his original will also has this J. The man who supposedly witnessed
John’s sig. is John A. Hall, who was a business partner of Grimes and his son William B. Neal
Hezekiah was exec. of Grimes’ will along with William B.

This day came Tandy Flanery before me the undersigned a Justice of the Peace for this County aforesaid
and made oath to the following facts;
To the best of his memory some time in the year 1841 or 1842 there was a proven acct put into his hands by
JAMES YATES aginst the Estate of John Allen Descd. which acct was proven by Maadson Boatwright
against said Estate and sold of James Yates the acct ? for four dollars which acct was credited by three
dollars paid by the Executor of said Allen a warrant was sesrved on the said Exc. for the other dollar and
returned before Isaac Grear as he believes which warrant and acct is lost or mislade so that it cannot be
found. given under my hand this 19th day of April 1845 (signed ) Jno. R. Carter

Another Note: Re A. M. Gray and David L. Cox. David L. Cox’s son Hiram married Nancy Treadway
the sister of Benjamin Treadway who married John’s daughter Elizabeth. A. M Gray was Alexander Gray

These Accounts of John Allen d. 1841 Scott County Virgina were presented by his brother in law and Executor Hezekiah Patrick Neal in a
Chancery Court Case brought against H.P. Neal by John’s daughter and her husband Elizabeth Allen Treadway, and Benjamin.
Sheila Allen Winterberg 4x great grand daughter of John Allen and Esther Jane Neal obtained these records from the files at the Virginia State Library, and spent many hours transcribing and arranging them in chronological order. Please feel free to copy for your personal files, but these are not for publication for profit. Original copies in possession of transcriber.
