Ella Taylor is my Mom’s Great Grandmother and remembers going to this house. My mom, Shirley Neely Fox, is the daughter of James and Lena Neely. Ella is my Grandfathers (James Neely) Grandmother.
I am searching for information regarding a log cabin somewhere in Duffield, that Ella was supposedly born in. James Neely’s cousin, Clint Wallace “Wob” Taylor showed me a article about it before he passed in 2011. Does anyone know where this log cabin is located?
Hi Debbie, my name is Gary Hilton, that is my Mother in the picture with Ella (Ellie). My Mother, Oma, and your Grandfather, James, are sister and brother, and your Mother, Shirley, is my 1st cousin. I have quite a bit of information on the family. One thing, Ella is not your Mom’s Great Grandmother. Your Mom’s Grandmother was Ida Taylor and she and Ella were sisters. Ella never married. Ida and Ella’s parents were Samuel and Amanda (Bishop) Taylor. Their home, where Ella was supposedly born, was reachable by a long path, which took off of new Highway 23. At the traffic light, drive Highway 23 toward Gate City. The path was visible off to the right, but it may be grownup now. I never tried to find the home, but did visit the home they moved to down on the main road (into the house with the Tree of Life paintings). Let me know if you would like some more info. I am going to post a comment to see if anyone has a picture of the original home, which was a log cabin. BTW, your Grandfather, James, was my favorite, and I spent a bit of time with he and Lena when I was young.
Hi Debbie, my name is Amy Anderson Hansen. Ella Taylor is my Great Great Aunt. Your mother Shirley is my mother’s 1st cousin. My mother’s father, William Elijah “Dooley” Neely, is James Neely’s brother. Your Uncle Carl Wayne Neely lives close by to my mother, Betty Joan Neely Anderson Proctor. Small world.
I have visited Aunt Ella when she lived in the log cabin that you had mentioned. She had a lot of pictures of members of the Taylor family through the years and remembered all of their names. Wished that I had wrote their names down, but I was young and wasn’t interested in family history at that time like I am now.
My mother has been to the museum that has the Tree of Life paintings (one of them was displayed). I have a picture of her standing next to the painting in the museum. Someone graciously took the picture for her and mailed the picture to her. I am glad that the paintings are being preserved. Part of our family history.
Samuel Pendleton Taylor and wife, Amanda Bishop Taylor, lived in a log cabin in Duffield, off new highway 23, as you head toward Gate City. They moved, along with their daughter, Ella, down to the main road into the house with the Tree of Life paintings. I am looking for a picture of the log cabin they called home, if anyone might have. As you head toward Gate City on new Highway 23, there was a long path to the right, which circled around the mountain, and led to the home (according to my Mother, who was a granddaughter of Samuel and Amanda. And I have a picture of Samuel, and if anyone has a picture of Amanda, I would like to have a copy.
