Descendants of Sarah Jane Barnett Jean Brand Generation No. 1 1. Sarah Jane9 Barnett (John William8, James7, James6 Barnet,Sr, James William5 Barnett, James4, John3, William2, William1) was born April 1855 in Big Ridge, Scott Co., VA, and died 1906 in Pauls Valley,Garvin Co., Indian Territory. She married Fanteroy M. Malicoat December 21, 1879 in Mt. Vernon, Rockcastle Co., KY, son of Fanteroy Malicoat and Susan Wright. He was born 1860 in Madison Co., Ky., and died July 25, 1927 in Pauls Valley, Garvin Co., Ok.. Notes for Sarah Jane Barnett: Sarah Jane sure had a hard life being married to Fanteroy. He would take off and marry another woman, never bothering with divorce. Maybe he chased around because he was younger than Sarah Jane, or was he just a great lover? Sarah Jane was with child,(Frank, died very young) when Fanteroy took off and married wife # 2 woman. Sarah held a great love for Kentucky, she instill her love for the Blue Grass state in her children. Oh how she hated to leave Kentucky . She had 2 small children and another one on the way ( Sarah Elizabeth) ,as she made her way across the country to join her husband in Texas. Fant had shot a man for slapping Sarah Jane, the sheriff gave him the choice of leaving the county, never to return or going to jail. Fant left his wife and children in the care of his father-in law, sister and brother-in-law, ( Eli Wallace & Phoebe (Malicoat) Barnett. The man was a known trouble maker. Oct., 1995, Sara L. (Davis) Allen and I were driving through the hills of Kentucky, talking about our Granny ( Sarah Elizabeth (Malicoat) Davis), about the love Sarah Jane had for Kentucky, remembering Granny saying she always wanted to see the Blue Grass of Kentucky, when I looked up to heaven and said," Granny look through my eyes and see the beauty of the Blue Grass of Kentucky". >From all the years of research I have done, I feel I have the right to state how I see Fanteroy M. Malicoat, my great grandfather. Name is under spelling Malicot and family number 205-182, copied from Pauls Valley library, Pauls Valley, OK. 1910 census lists Frank Malicoat as head of house, age 55, no wife. Fantroy was a playboy, he was still married to Sarah Jane [she was carrying Frank in her womb] when Fanteroy ran of and started living with a "old Lady Blue". When this lady became pregnant and Fanteroy refused to marry her, she took the life of her unborn child and her own. After her death, Fanteroy returned yet to took another wife, Elizabeth George and started yet another family. Records show proof on the same 11-13-1900, Fanteroy took yet another wife, Millie Beard in Maxwell, Indian Territory. No divorce has ever been found for Fanteroy. I found Fanteroy M. Malicoat and Elizabeth George's son Luther Malicoat and his son, Travis Malicoat living in CA. 7-1996. Notes for Fannie Lou Davis: Officiation Rev.'s Joe Tidwell and Jack Barker "I'm Now in Heaven" I'm now in heaven, the gates have opened wide. And now I have the privilege, of walking by HIS side. The angel choir is singing, and the music is so sweet. I'll join them soon as I, worship at HIS feet. I'm now in heaven, and the blood washed throng is here. I recognize a lot of them, there's not a single tear. There's joy beyond description, and reunion by the score. There'll be no separation, for we'll be here ever more. I'm now in heaven, please wipe away your tears! I've fought the battle, ran the race, I'm rid of all my fears. There is no pain or sorrow, the heart aches are past. I've read and sung of heaven, and now I'm here at last. I'm now in heaven, and oh the place is grand! No one could ever tell me, the beauties of the land. Since I can not describe it, you'll have to come and see. That is was worth the trials, to live here eternally. This was read at Fanny "Granny's" funeral. More About Fannie Lou Davis: Fact 1: March 04, 1997, Services Brentwood Funeral Home, Ca. Notes for Jessie Hix: Last Rites Held for Jessie J. Hix Friends were saddened last Friday morning upon the announcement that death had claimed Jessie J. Hix. Although ill for several months and little hopes had been held for his recovery, the news of his passing cast a shadow over the community. Funeral services were conducted Sunday afternoon from the First Baptist Church of which the deceased was a member. A beautiful floral array was evidence of the respect in which Mr. Hix and his family was held in the community. A quartet composed of Mrs. Bunyan Paxton, Mrs. Dan Pickrell, Mrs. Leon Stansell, and Mrs. Dora Lou Williams sang two selections, " How Beautiful Heaven Must Be," and " Beyond the Sunset." As a solo Bunyan Paxton sang, "Sunrise Tomorrow." As his text, Rev. W. D. Baker chose Luke 20:36 which read " Neither can they died any more: for they are equal unto the angels, and are the children of God, being the children of the resurrection." The minister said," The supreme tragedy in life is that men and women are born and many live to a ripe old age and go to their graves and into the great beyond without learning what life is for; but that the deceased had faith." A faith that was more than a dogma. Rev. Baker stated that faith lives and achieves and quoting from the scriptures said "Therefore the redeemed of the Lord shall be upon their heads; they shell obtain gladness and joy; and sorrow and mourning shall flee away." Jessie J. Hix was born April 26, 1913, at Rivia, Oklahoma. He moved to ray at the age of eight. Anderson 438 March 30, 1937 Biography of Mr. Joe Davis (white) 3 miles west of Pauls Valley, Oklahoma Born: Alabama March 21,1881 Parents: James Robert Finley Davis, ALA. (deceased) Millie Blackwell, ALA (deceased) Story Told By: Mr. Joe Davis, born March 21,1881, ALABAMA "I came to the Indian Territory with my father and mother in 1892. I was 11 years old, we came through on the Santa Fe train from Texas to Pauls Valley, Indian Territory. On arriving at Pauls Valley, my father bought 2 horses and a wagon, we loaded up our household things, that my father has shipped through. It was not much, we had 4 chairs, table, homemade bedstead and a few other household things. My father moved to Purdy, a little place about 25 miles southwest of Pauls Valley. There was a store, lone schoolhouse, Blacksmith shop and a Grist Mill. This mill was ran by steam and owned by Mr. Park (Hart). The Blacksmith Shop was owned by Jim Welch. I do not remember who owned the store. I went to school at this Log School house. A white woman was my teacher, I do not remember her name. My father had to pay her one dollar a month for me. Us kids that went to school did not have desks, we used slates and set on the hued down logs for seats. I had a blue back speller and a reader. I think there was about 25 or 30 children went to this school, the year I went. I did not go much the second term, only on the days we could not work in the fields. I had to help my father on the farm. My father had about 100 acres leased, he raised lots of corn and cotton. He would haul the cotton to Pauls Valley on the Washita river. I believe this mill and gin went out of business. There was lots of deer around Purdy, when we moved there, I have seen as high as 15 deer in one drove, around the foot of the Table Mountains, south of Purdy. Wild turkey's I have shelled corn and feather, about one mile from our house was a big turkey roast, they would come around our corn crib early of a morning. We could have turkey anytime to eat we wanted to. I have gone hunting and would not even shoot at a turkey. I like rabbits better, there was lots of coon, possum and skunks around Purdy. I have broke wild horses for my father when I was 14 years old. Sunday, that was our "fun day". After Sunday school a group of boys that lived around Purdy, would meet at my house, nearly all owned saddle horses. We would go out on the prairie, there was not very many fences then. We would rope calves and have our rodeo, riding these calves on Sunday was when I learned to ride. When I was at the age of 15, I was not afraid to try any wild broncs or did I not care how big the steers were. We boys would make up $5.00 purses for the best rider for that day. I have won several times. My father raised some cattle and hogs, but his main crop was corn. Corn was cheap then, I have seen my father sell corn for fifteen cents a bushel. My father sold about 20 Acers of corn for ten cents a bushel in the filed. I do not know how much corn the man he sold that year gathered, but we usually made forty to fifty bushels an Acer. I lived with my father and mother around Purdy, until I was married in 1900. I married Lisa Sarah Malecoat, daughter of F.L. Malecoat, who was a big cattle man around Purdy, when my father moved there. My wife was born in Purdy, I do not know how long her people has been in the Indian Territory, before my father and mother came there. After getting married I moved on a farm and went to farming for myself. In later years I have raised as high as 75 bales of cotton a year. My wife and I have reared 10 children. I now live 3 miles west of Pauls Valley. I have lived around in what is now Garvin county for 45 year. " A copy of this interview was sent by Walter Malicoat January 20, 1994. The third child born of Joe and Sally Daivs died at the age of 3 from a spider bit. Sarah Elizabeth (Malicoat) Davis wasn't born at Purdy, Okla., she was born in TX. Her mother was with child when Sarah Jane (Barnett) Malicoat left Ky by wagon to TX to join her husband, Fanteroy. The child Sarah Jane Malicoat was carrying was Sarah Elizabeth Malicoat, ( my grandmother). This bit came from an old news paper found in my mom's picture box, no date, but most likely about 1945, Pauls Valley, Garvin Co., OK. "Dear Imogene: It was so good to talk to you. Here's is the card I promised you. Maurice our daughter had them made up. The lights has gone out of my beloveds eyes-but the smile on his face seems to tell me that he knows something I don't know - He was my Darling, my Sweetheart, my Husband, my Lover, my Friend. He died two months to the day before our 62 Wedding Anniversary. Our first real date was the 19th of July in 1937. I thought I knew who he was when we were 14 years old in High School Study Hall when I was in the 9th grade and he was in the 8th grade. Pecho Thompson was the Study Hall teacher. Ralph would set with his geography book in front of his face - shooting paper wads - and do all kinds of things to tease Jerry Grimmet - like tying her sash around the back of her seat - put her pig tails (hair braids) in the ink well & screw the top back on and she would get up and go to the Pencil sharpener with that ink well hanging onto her braid - Bob Shares and Peg Thompson would giggle and laugh so much Pech would take them out in the hall and give them a swat with his paddle. Ralph would get up and walk down the hall to the library window. I'd get up and go to the library just to stand next to him. He'd look down his nose at me as if to say, "who are you skinney Fix? frechle face?" This picture of him was made just before our 50th Wedding Anniversary when we renewed our wedding vows. Sanford (Ralph's brother), Jot Gunter, LaJuana and Dick Hatman went with us to get married. They were all there and stood with us as we took our renewal of vows. Since we eloped to get married, he always told me that someday we would do it right and renew our vows. So we did fifty years later. God has been so good to us and gave us Handsfull of Purpose. Two of the most wonderful sons and hree beautiful daughters. Five of the most talented and worthwhile people any couple ever had, have called us Daddy and Moma to these many years. He loved his family dearly, made a good living for us and gave us a good home and worked so hard to do it. Well I;m making so many mistakes I'll close for now. My heart and mind are up there in the hill on the back (east) side of Mt. Olivet Cemetery. After we buried Chris up there he always said, "if I get tired lying down here, I can just get up and walk over and look down on the Washita River Bottom where I grew up." Pray for me. Notes for Imogene Annis Davis: Birth Cert. says: Annis Imogene Davis, father: Joe Davis, mother: Sarah Malecote State of OK Imogene's childhood stories: [My mother was 78 yrs young when relating these stories. Mother would start to laugh and just talk up a storm and me asking questions]. "My older brother, your Uncle Ed had to take care of us kids a lot, Papa was always gone taking cows to Okla City and mom had to cook and clean for 12 kids." Born: "I asked my mom one day, where did I come from" Mom said a buzzard laid me in a egg, the sun hatched me and she came along and took me for her daughter". Sailing: "Me and Dorothy were just small, when my some of my older brothers and sisters put us in mom old wash tub and sent us sailing down on the Washita Creek, we didn't know how to swim, but really thought it was something til my brother, Ed had to swim out and get us." Blackman: "Beady always wanted to preach, she would take us kids down to the river and play church, then she would baptize us, if we didn't go along with her, she'd hold our head under water til we gave into her. This one day, we all set and listen to Beady just a preaching up a storm when a black man walked up behind Beady, us kids took off running, Beady turned around and saw that black man and dropped to her knees and prayed, "God let me get to the hatchet and kill this Blackman before he hurts me". The hatchet was laying between Beady and the blackman. We set and laugh about that to this day" Praying to the Plate: "We lived down on the river bottom, Papa was farming the Old Brothers place, one day Ed told us this man was coming to eat and this man prayed to his plate and we weren't to laugh or make fun of him. We all got up to the table and sure enough, this man looked at his plate and started praying, for the food on his plate, but his plate was empty, the food was setting in the bowls. Us kids set there waiting for the food to move through the air to his plate, it never did. That did it, us kids started laughing and Ed made us leave the table. That was the first time I ever saw a man pray to his plate". Moonshine: "My cousin, Jr Beddo was a deputy sheriff, and when they were going to pull a raid on Moon-Shiners, Jr would tell Papa and Ed, then Ed would hide in a new the place. It all came from Harshall Roberts, he'd go to Ark pick up a load and bring it to Pauls Valley, Papa and Ed would hide it for him. Well, mom got real sick and the doctors in Pauls Valley told Papa that mom was going to died. Harshall Roberts came and talked a long time to Papa and Harshall took mom to Okla City to his doctors. They all kept saying mom's going to die and I told them mom's wasn't going to die and she didn't. They all thought cause I was a small kid that I didn't realize what was going on. Harshall brought mom's home and she was much better, the doctors in Pauls Valley came to see mom's and couldn't believe mom's didn't die. One of the doctors was Doc Johnson. Harshall paid for mom's surgery and hospital bill himself, because when Harshall was real sick, mom's took him fresh eggs and milk every day and nursed him til he was well. Hershall was mom 's son in law, Jeromy Robert's brother". Bus Ride: "When I was about in the 3rd grade, the school bus took us all to near Elmore City to see these "famous men in their coffins", think they were outlaws. So many people were there, crying and carrying on. That was my first long bus ride." NOTE: After I checked records, the two men were Will Rogers and Robert S. Kerr. When I told mother who the men were she couldn't believe it, she thought they were some famous outlaws. Mother's reply was, "now I can say I saw Will Rogers". He married Lurena Elizabeth "Rennie" Lunsford August 16, 1909 in Antioch, Garvin Co., OK, daughter of Robert Lunsford and Elizabeth Price. She was born March 02, 1893 in Gillam, Seviers Co., ARK, and died October 01, 1980 in Lubbock, TX. Notes for Lurena Elizabeth "Rennie" Lunsford: Wheelchair - Bound Woman Cares For Her Own Lawn by Curtis C. Wynne staff writer Laurena Malicoat, 77 year old widow residing at 303 N.E. First St., has a few words to say to homeowners in the City. "All those weeds people let grow in their yards are bad for mine," she said. " Those weeds seeds just blow over into my yard, and I'll bet I pulled a million weeds this spring." Mrs. Malicoat might have a place to talk, too. She lives alone in a small, newly painted white house sitting in the center of literally hundreds of blooming flowers and a close-cut green lawn. She does her yard work from a wheelchair. She does her housework from the same wheelchair. Coming to Carlsbad in 1950, Mrs. Malicoat, a widow even then, worked at odd jobs care for the elderly and baby setting, saving every penny she earned, and bought her house for less than $3,000. "In ten years,: she said. "I finally have the house and yard the way looking like I want them to." Mrs. Malicoat has been in the wheelchair for five years. "I just woke up one morning and I couldn't stand up." Her son and daughter built a small ramp leading from the ground up to the back door of the house so that she would not fall down the steps. She stung a string from the handle of the back screen door to the end of a hand rail so that she can open the door before rolling the wheelchair up the ramp/ Yard work is not this energetic woman's only hobby. She has a stamp collection, an art collection and a collection of her own paintings. Mrs. Malicoat remains active in all her hobbies, too. " I do just a little of nearly everything. But I don't mow the lawn." she said. She hires young boys to come over to mow her lawn for her. Then she pulls the weeds that crop up, and she keeps her flowers fed and watered. Mrs. Malicoat scoots around in that wheelchair, and keeps her yard and gardens as pretty as any in the city, and prettier than most. Children of John Malicoat and Lurena Lunsford are: 33 i. Notes for Calvin Lee Davis: Tubes For The Master The young lad stood inside a garage filled with what appeared to him to be junk. He look around and shook his head. Why would anyone want to save such unbelievable stuff. "Yes," he said to himself, "all these old television and radio tubes are just junk. As he turned to leave his father strolling in with his hand full of more of his collection of tubes. "Dad, why are you saving all these tubes, Please explain the purpose to me." "Son, let's set here on this crate, and I'll tell you my story." He paused as if in thought, reach up into an old can, brought out an old tube, set it beside his son, then began his story. "A long time ago, Son, I was like this old tube. I was dirty, cracked and useless. There was nothing inside that worked, I had been tossed aside as an old piece of forgotten junk. One day a wonderful think took place. A man who called himself Jesus picked me up. He changed me from inside out. I now had the power that shone through me with a light that was like no other. I no longer felt dirty. In an instant I was clean. I did still have some cracks on the outside. Jesus, who was now of my entire life, told me the cracks were part of my personality, and in due time, He would use them for His purpose. One of the cracks was lack of education, but He told me He'd use me even though the crack was still there. He asked me if I'd help Him find other tubes and bring them to Him. I hesitated, but the Master reminded me of how Moses could not always speak so, at times, He used Aaron to speak for him. I'll give you someone to help you and stand with you. He did. Son, that someone was your mom. Together we went looking for tubes for Christ. Those tubes, like these, became like a family, a family in Christ. These tubes,"he paused and waved his hand over the entire collection, "represent some we've gathered for the Master's Kingdom. The tubes comes in many sizes and shapes. Some have rough places on them. Some are real smooth. But they all have a place in God's Kingdom. Some of these tubes are still blank on the inside, no light coming from them, useless. I'll keep showing them my light until my Master calls me into His Kingdom. When I do, Son, you must carry on. It's simple. You shed your light. Other tubes will follow your light to Him. Son, do you want to be a useful tube?" "Yes, Dad," said the son. The father replied, "Tell Christ to light your inside with His light," The son did just that. Tubes, tubes, tubes. Dad gave his many years to searching out, preaching, praying, and living the light of Christ. His light is still burning, but it is to be seen in his beloved Master's Mansion. It shines ever so brightly. It is so beautiful; no cracks, no flaws, no disease, no disabilities. He is pure through and through. But, he's not alone. Right beside him is his beautiful soul mate that God found for him. The son now misses his dad, but he no longer looks at his dad's tubes as junk. They are very precious indeed. He will show his light and someday take his place beside his beloved dad and mom and all the other tubes they had found and showed the light to. In memory of Calvin Davis, Sr by Jan Davis Calvin's daughter in law November 10, 1996 More About Calvin Lee Davis: Burial: Kingsburg Cemetery, Kingsburg, CA Notes for Lillian Ozella Lanning: The Master's Tree The Master of the forest stroll's through His fine creation. It is now time to remove another one of His special trees. This wonderful specimen He had designed for His purpose. The tree had borne much good fruit. It had developed a disease that had left this once beautiful tree worn out and the leaves were beginning to sag under the strain of the disease. The fruit still glistens in the sun. Anyone passing by can see he rich full fruit and barely notice the drooping leaves and the falling bark. Since the Master's plan in this tree's life has been fulfilled, He wants this creation that was made in His own image to go to the Eternal Forest. To be planted in his Forest and Garden of Beauty is a desire of all His trees. Thus one morning the Master quietly sends His men who serve as angels, they gently remove the tree. All the forest surrounding stands and watches with sadness. But the Master has not let the tree die, Rather, He replants it. A lonely tree had stood close to the one removed. He had been there side by side of the tree before the tree had the disease and after it had consumed the tree. He heard no complaints. He had seen the marvelous fruit. His heart was overwhelmed by this tree that had claimed his heart. This tree that had been taken had borne this younger tree and had led him to the Master. The Master stands close by as the tree grieves. Then He ever so gently speaks, "Son, I had only let you have the tree for a while. It really belonged to me att the time," Now months have passed, the tree is still lonely but with each passing day he feels peace inside and less angry about losing his tree. The tree realizes that his life must go on. He knows he will always remember his tree, The best way to go on is continue to bear his fruit. Someday when he is replanted he will see the tree once again. The tree at last feels a breath of fresh air blowing through the forest. With this movement on this very still day, the tree senses that his beloved tree brings him a sign; a sign of assurance that he will always have his tree close in his heart. He can now grieve a little less. In memory of Lillian Davis by Jan Davis Lillian's dau in law July 18, 1996 More About Lillian Ozella Lanning: Burial: Kingsburg Cemetery, Kingsburg, CA 8.
