Quite a few years ago I started a website on Rootsweb that I envisioned as a place where I could put, online, scanned images of our ancestors that were in some way connected to Scott County Virginia. It started out as pictures of people, then quickly evolved with pictures of headstones, scanned documents and family files from many generous contributors.
I wanted to post these images and allow folks to comment on them, to add their knowledge to the pages that featured these pictures. It took me a little while to write the scripts and set things up so this could happen. It was clunky and time consuming and before long, because of the huge response, along with other things that were going on in my life, it became more than I could manage. That was then…
Things have changed quite a bit on the internet. With the advent of blogging and blogging software, what I had envisioned in the beginning is easier than ever to accomplish.
I have imported the information from the old site, and left modified index pages there to redirect all page queries to this site.
Please remember that the information contained here has been donated by folks like you and I, for your personal use. Feel free to copy or print any of the information for your personal records, but they are not to be reproduced in any form for profit.
I hope that you find here the treasures that I have.
My father (Henry Stuart Taylor) was born in Dunganen VA. In Scott County Virginia. My grandfather (Robert Lee Taylor) and grandmother (Louisa Creech Taylor) lived in Dunganen. Robert Lee Taylor’s parents and my great grandparents were John Taylor and his wife Orpha Ann Nash Taylor. My father had pleasant memories of his Dunganon VA. home. He spoke of having a large number of cousins there. He encouraged my brothers and I to visit that area. Any communication or photos would be very much appreciated. I have a photo of ORPHA ANN NASH TAYLOR that I will be happy to share. Glenna Taylor Cox glennacox@me.com

My grandfather married Ida May Heron (On ancestry.com, I have found it as Herron as few times) in 1906. Ida and Robert Shirts moved back to his home in Idaho where she passed away in 1908. After my mother passed away, I inherited Ida’s photos. Of course, there is no names on them. After much research on ancestry.com I have discovered that she came from a large family, her parents where WH and Caroline Heron, both from Scott County. I have scanned the photos and would love to get copies back to her family and would also like to learn more about Ida’s family.

Please is anyone able to give me any data, or clues on the Joseph Johnson family that was attack by Indians at Rye Cove in 1789 ? I am searching for information about James Elbert Riggs, born Feb. 2, 1851 in Rye Cove, Scott County VA. His parents were Richard and Nancy Riggs and he was married to Nancy Putt. There is a document called “The Riggs Family of Scott County Virginia 1782-1960” for which I am searching for a copy. If anyone has a copy I would be so grateful to have it and any other clues to this family.

My maternal grandmother was Anna Mae Spears and married John Claud Vaughn. Family history (unproven) has stated that Speer’s Ferry was named after her family and that they were of Cherokee lineage. Duly noted is the difference in spelling. I am unsure of her DOB, but I do know she died in 1954 and bore 16 children, some of whom died in infancy (one was a set of stillborn twins). My grandfather died in 1962 and the last of their children passed away July 31, 2013.
If anyone has any information to help back up this claim, please contact me at: t7years@aol.com and notate it in the subject line so I won’t think it’s spam and delete it.
Thank you,
Tab (Harris) Hall – not related to the Harris family listed here
I just noticed that today would have been my mother’s 73rd birthday!
Looking for any information on Joseph Fisher Gibson, Born in VA and lived in Scott Co before settling on Newman’s Ridge Tenn, just across the VA line into Tenn.
What I do know is he signed a marriage bond for David Sexton and lecreasy Gibson dated
1819 in knox Co, KY.
How he ties into these 2 are unknown but the families all lived in the tri-state area of
VA, Tenn, KY.
Joseph Fisher Gibson shows up on census papers in Hawkins Co, Tenn from 1820-1860.
He was my GGGG-GF.
It’s assumed he was born around 1793 but I have never found any documentation on this his parents are unknown, and if he had brothers or sisters that to is unknown.
I have taken several types of DNA tests and did find one thing out of interest the area that Joseph Fisher Gibson settled in, (NEWMAN’S RIDGE TENNESSEE) was a isulated area with a very tight knit group of Families that did not take to outsider’s very well but the said leader on the Mountain was Vardy Collins who’s best friend was Shepard Gibson it’s said Vardy married Shepard’s sister
Margaret (Spanish Peggy) Gibson.
Through my DNA testing I found a direct male decendant from Shepard Gibson’s line I’m a direct Male decendant from Joseph Fisher Gibson’s line and our DNA is a exact match which would mean that Joseph Fisher Gibson was probably a child of one of Shepard’s brothers or sisters but again none are known and the search continues.
Any clues would be greatly appreciated.

Family as well.
Just came across this site in my research regarding Edward (aka Edmund) Collins b. 1827 Ireland and m. Elizabeth Catherine Blalock 1863 in Scott County. Through DNA matches I have connections to the descendants of this couple (with my connection I believe through Edward). I have hit some roadblocks finding out any additional details for Edward – happy to connect with anyone who may have info. I did find Elizabeth’s 2nd marriage certificate after Edward’s death (McNutt) on here which was neat.
Thanks,
Vicki
