Abidja “Bige” Clinton Hammonds

Abidja Clinton Hammonds - Harvey Gilliam

Sue writes;

Patty,

I hope someone in Scott County recognizes this family.  I don’t seem to be able to connect with anyone who might have information.

This is a picture of Abidja “Bige” Clinton Hammonds.  I was told the large gentleman with him is his uncle Harvey Gilliam.  Would like to know if this is Harvey Gilliam or one of  “Bige’s” other uncles.  “Bige” died at age 22 leaving a wife and 14 month old son.  His mother was Louisa (Louisiana) Gilliam daughter of Elizabeth D. Carter and Jesse L. Gilliam.  His father was Marion L. Hammonds, son of  Nancy Williams and Anderson Hammonds.

“Bige” was born in 1886.  The 1890 census was burned and he died July 4th, 1908, therefore, he appears in only one census, the 1900 census when he is living with  a member of the Gilliam family.

The picture has J. S. Osburn, Artist – Blackwater, Va., Written on the bottom.

Thank you for publishing all these old pictures.  They are really a joy to see.

Click on the image to see a larger version. This photo is very large, I left it that way so the faces would be clearer. I believe the the man in the center with the white beard may be Thomas DINGUS, based not only on his appearance, but also the tilt of his head and the slope of his shoulders. Please use the comment link below and let us know what you think. Thanks.

Dave writes;

Pat, I have no idea of the people in this photo, it was in with some of my
PETERS and WILLIAMS pictures that came from the Scott Co. things that I
have. I’m in hopes that someone might identify some of these people.

Accounts against the Estate of John Allen d. Jan 1841 Scott Co. VA

Note: In these old records Dr. stands for Debtor, and To also means “For” as in what the amount being charged is for
So if saying To does not sound right try saying For…. I can’t type it the way they wrote it. I have tried to keep the spelling the way it was on these documents. I have also written notes to myself about some of the accounts. I transcribed these into a Spreadsheet so the alignment here may not be great, but Is still readable. Enjoy!

Calvin Alexander AKA “Elic” was the son of John G. Allen and Margaret Campbell. Calvin married Ibby McClure d/o Alza Williams McClure Large. John G. Allen was the son of John Allen and Esther Jane Neal. Alza Williams was the daughter of Neriah Williams and Matilda Head.

Besides Calvin being a first cousin to my gg grandpa Samuel Neal Allen, his wife Ibby was a 1/2 sister to Samuel’s wife Corsenia “Senie” Large.

I obtained this photo from Cecil Griffith, grandson of Calvin Alexander Allen.  Thanks Cecil.

Sloantown School, 1918

On the 19th of January, 2001, Genell wrote;
I am sending you the picture of the one room school at Sloantown in Scott county. This is a great picture of many children who lived along the Clinch River that attended school at Sloantown. They had to cross the river in a boat to get to school. Amanda Williams Qualls sent me a copy of this picture. She is in the picture and is still living in Scott county. She gave me the names of the children in the pictures. I love the bare feet and the knickers.
